This unit introduces Year 1 students to the fundamental concepts of striking and fielding games through collaborative hit, run, and catch activities. The emphasis is on developing basic hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness whilst learning the joy of working together as a team. Through progressive skill-building, students discover how individual actions contribute to team success, building both physical competence and social understanding in a supportive, game-based environment.

Lesson 1

Catching and Quick Movement

Big Question:

How can we work together to catch balls and move quickly to score points?

Key Objectives:

• Perform quick runs between markers with control and coordination
• Work as a team to send and receive balls accurately

Lesson 2

Choosing Where to Hit

Big Question:

How can we outsmart fielders by choosing where to hit the ball?

Key Objectives:

• To hit balls off cones with increasing accuracy
• To make tactical decisions about where to hit the ball

Lesson 3

Fielding Positions & Interception

Big Question:

How can we work together as fielders to stop the ball and prevent runs?

Key Objectives:

• Identify where batters are hitting the ball and position ourselves strategically
• Work cooperatively to intercept balls as a fielding team

Lesson 4

Fielding to Bases

Big Question:

How can we work together as fielders to stop runners from scoring?

Key Objectives:

• To introduce the concept of fielding balls to bases to stop runners
• To develop teamwork skills when working together to return balls to bases

Lesson 5

Catching High Balls and Fielding

Big Question:

How can we become better catchers and work together as a team to stop runs being scored?

Key Objectives:

• To attempt to catch a ball that has been hit in the air
• To position effectively as fielders to limit runs scored

Team Fielding & Hitting Strategy

Big Question:

How can we work as a team to score runs and stop the other team from scoring?

Key Objectives:

• Work collaboratively to restrict runs through effective fielding
• Hit balls into space to score runs strategically
