This unit develops Year 4 students' understanding of tag rugby through a carefully structured progression from foundational passing and movement skills to tactical team play. The focus is on building both attacking creativity and defensive teamwork, enabling students to understand their dual roles in invasion games. By culminating in tournament play, students apply their learning in authentic competitive contexts that emphasise fair play and strategic thinking.

Passing, Moving and Creating Space

How can we use passing and moving skills to beat defenders and score tries?

Key Objectives:

• Develop accurate backwards passing whilst moving forwards
• Create and use space effectively to beat opponents

Lesson 2

Passing and Moving in 3v3 Games

Big Question:

How can we combine passing and moving skills to win tag rugby games?

Key Objectives:

• To extend understanding of passing and moving by applying skills in 3v3 mini games
• To demonstrate accurate backward passing whilst moving forwards

Developing Defending Skills

Big Question:

How can we work together as defenders to stop attackers from scoring?

Key Objectives:

• Develop accurate tagging technique and understanding of when to tag
• Learn how to work together as a defending unit to prevent tries

Defending in Game Situations

How can we work together as a defensive team to stop attackers from scoring?

Key Objectives:

• Apply understanding of tagging technique in game situations
• Develop defensive positioning and teamwork strategies
