Acting as a referee to ensure fair play and rule adherence during games
Understanding where pupils are coming from and where they're going
Vocabulary development for tactical and evaluative language, structured discussion and debate skills, giving and receiving constructive feedback
Tournament brackets and game calculations, timing and scoring, statistical analysis of team performance and success rates
Forces and motion in ball throwing trajectories, reaction times and human reflexes, heart rate and exercise physiology
Fair play and respect for others, dealing with winning and losing, leadership and responsibility as referees
Move between courts to observe all games while maintaining overview of entire space. Position near referee when supporting decision-making.
Watch for tactical decision-making, sportsmanship under pressure, and application of skills learned throughout unit. Note specific examples for recognition.
Step in if sportsmanship deteriorates, referee decisions need support, or safety concerns arise. Guide rather than take over student leadership.
Model excellent sportsmanship in all interactions. Show how to give and receive feedback constructively. Demonstrate tactical thinking through questioning rather than telling.
Two separate court areas minimum 15m x 8m each with 3m buffer zone between courts
Indoor hall with non-slip surface, free from water or debris. Outdoor use only if dry conditions
Stop play immediately if injury occurs. Assess severity and provide appropriate first aid. Clear communication with all students about what to do during emergencies.
