This unit introduces Year 7 students to essential self-protection skills through a carefully scaffolded progression from safe falling techniques to controlled defensive movements. The focus is on developing body awareness, controlled responses and personal safety knowledge in a supportive, trust-building environment. Through physical skill development and reflective assessment, students build confidence in their ability to protect themselves whilst understanding the responsibility that comes with these techniques.

Lesson 1

How can we protect ourselves safely if we fall or are knocked to the ground?
Key Objectives:
- • Understand when and why to adopt the break fall technique to protect the head and body
- • Demonstrate the break fall technique safely with correct weight distribution

How can understanding technique and control help us stay safe in challenging situations?
Key Objectives:
- • Understand the safety implications and responsibilities of practicing self defence with partners
- • Develop trust and demonstrate responsible behaviour when working in partnership activities
Lesson 3
Big Question:
How can proper rolling technique protect you from injury in real-world situations?
Key Objectives:
- • Understand when and why to adopt the forward roll and how to do this safely in a self-defence context
- • Distinguish between gymnastics forward rolls and jujitsu forward rolls, recognising the importance of head and neck protection

How can controlling your body through rolls help protect you and improve your defensive movement?
Key Objectives:
- • Understand when and why to adopt the backward roll and how to execute this safely with proper head and neck protection
- • Demonstrate both forward and backward rolling techniques with correct body positioning and control

- • Demonstrate mastery of all five core self-defence movements with correct technique and safety awareness
