This unit introduces Year 7 students to the fundamental skills of softball through a carefully sequenced progression from individual technique to competitive match play. The focus is on developing technical competence in catching, throwing, fielding, hitting, and pitching whilst building tactical understanding of how defensive skills can create attacking opportunities. Through progressive challenges, students develop both the physical literacy required for striking and fielding games and the decision-making abilities essential for effective team play.

Lesson 1

How can we use our body position and hand-eye coordination to control different types of catches in softball?
Key Objectives:
- • To develop knowledge and understanding of the basic fundamentals of softball
- • To perform different types of catches (fly balls and ground balls) with control and accuracy
Lesson 2
Big Question:
How can mastering different throwing techniques give your team a competitive advantage in softball?
Key Objectives:
- • To perform both underarm and overarm throws with correct technique
- • To understand when to use underarm throws (close distances) versus overarm throws (long distances) in game situations

How can making smart fielding decisions turn defence into attack?

- • To perform the basic pick-up technique when fielding with correct body positioning
- • To understand and apply tactical decisions about which base to throw to

- • To understand and develop knowledge of the correct methods of hitting the ball and turning the body
- • To perform the correct techniques of hitting, turning body, backing up and retrieving the ball
