Groups of repetitions performed together, e.g., 6 x 25m means 6 repetitions of 25 metres
The number of times you repeat a specific distance or exercise
The rules and behaviours for sharing swimming lanes safely and respectfully, including staying left and maintaining spacing
Alternating between periods of high intensity effort and lower intensity recovery
Controlling your speed and effort to maintain performance throughout a training session
Taking personal choice and control over your own activities and learning
Helping others, following safety rules, and being a positive training partner
Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type - the framework for designing effective training programmes
Understanding where pupils are coming from and where they're going
Speaking and listening skills during discussions and reflection, articulating thoughts about performance and feelings, learning and using technical vocabulary accurately in context, following complex verbal instructions, peer communication and encouragement during activities
Counting reps and sets, calculating rest intervals in seconds, measuring pool distances (metres), understanding ratios in interval training (1:1 fast to easy), tracking consistency of times across repetitions, graphing performance data over multiple sessions
Understanding cardiovascular system response to exercise (heart rate changes), respiratory system during sustained activity (breathing rate, oxygen consumption), muscular system (aerobic vs anaerobic energy systems), effects of warm-up and cool-down on body temperature and muscle function, principles of training adaptation (FITT), recovery processes and lactic acid
Understanding of spatial awareness in lanes (positioning, distances, directions), concepts of left and right from different perspectives, measurement and estimation of distances, navigating physical space safely and efficiently
Using online platforms (Swim Fit website) for learning resources, digital registration and account creation, accessing web-based training programmes independently, using technology to support personal fitness goals, digital literacy in navigating training resources
Resilience and perseverance through challenging physical activity, setting personal goals and working towards them independently, self-assessment and honest reflection on performance, responsibility for own safety and consideration for others (lane etiquette), positive mental health through physical activity, teamwork and peer encouragement, independence and taking ownership of learning
Stand at pool edge with clear sight lines to all lanes throughout lesson. During main set, move along pool edge to observe different lanes from multiple angles. Never turn back to the pool. Position yourself at corner for diagonal visibility during reflection discussions.
Prioritise safety scanning continuously. Watch for: lane discipline (positioning and spacing), signs of exhaustion or distress (laboured breathing, technique breakdown, stopping mid-length), stroke technique maintenance under fatigue, appropriate challenge level for individual students, positive interactions and encouragement between students.
Intervene immediately for: any safety concerns, lane etiquette violations that risk collisions, students showing excessive exhaustion, technique completely breaking down (indicates too hard a challenge), competitive behaviour overriding training focus, students not taking adequate rest periods, any signs of distress or discomfort.
Demonstrate lane etiquette by walking the path along pool edge showing left-side swimming. Demonstrate fast vs easy pace through exaggerated movement differences (arm speed, power). If appropriate and safe, swim one demonstration length showing perfect lane discipline. Use whiteboard extensively for visual learning of terminology and set structure. Show enthusiasm and energy to build engagement.
25m swimming pool minimum, 4-6 lanes available, adequate depth for continuous swimming (minimum 1m depth recommended), clear visibility throughout pool
Pool water quality verified and within safe parameters (chlorine, pH levels), water temperature suitable for sustained activity (28-30°C optimal), lane ropes securely fastened and in good condition, pool sides non-slip and free from hazards
In case of emergency: 1) Use whistle to stop all activity immediately, 2) Direct all students to nearest wall and hold on, 3) Lifeguard responds to emergency according to pool protocols, 4) Teacher accounts for all students and provides support, 5) Activate emergency services if required (999), 6) Follow school critical incident procedures and inform leadership immediately, 7) Complete accident/incident documentation
