•Distribute balls to groups at start of skill development; store safely at court edges during game play
Alternative: Beach volleyballs or lighter training volleyballs for students developing confidence
Mark out multiple courts 9m x 6m (or adapted sizes); use bright colours for visibility
Alternative: Spot markers, rope with flags, or use existing court markings
Distribute to differentiate teams during game play
Alternative: Wristbands, coloured headbands, or team labels
Position safely at court edge with clear view of game play; ensure GDPR compliance for filming
Alternative: Mobile phones on stable surfaces; GoPro cameras on stands
Use to draw formations and tactical diagrams during explanations
Alternative: Clipboard with large diagrams, iPad with drawing app projected
The planned strategies and decisions used to gain an advantage over opponents
The specific locations players occupy on court to maximise offensive and defensive effectiveness
The player who sets up attacking opportunities by delivering accurate high sets to spikers
The player who approaches and strikes the ball powerfully downward over the net
The defensive player at the net who jumps to deflect or block opponent's spike
The organised arrangement of players on court for offensive or defensive purposes
Varying tactics and attacking options so opponents cannot anticipate your next move
The ability to analyse the game situation and make tactical decisions that exploit opponent weaknesses
Understanding where pupils are coming from and where they're going
Angles of ball trajectory when setting and spiking; calculating court dimensions and spacing for drills (area and perimeter); scorekeeping and statistics (points scored, successful sets/spikes); rotational geometry when explaining player rotation patterns around court positions; percentages when analysing success rates (6 out of 8 = 75%)
Forces acting on volleyball during spike (gravity, air resistance, applied force); trajectory and motion - parabolic flight path of set; Newton's laws during jumping and landing (action-reaction forces); centre of gravity and balance during movement; cardiovascular response to exercise during game play; muscular-skeletal system and which muscles used in volleyball actions
Spatial awareness and positioning on court representing use of space; directions and movement patterns (forward, backward, sideways, clockwise rotation); mapping court zones and player positions; origins of volleyball and where it's played worldwide
Teamwork and cooperation skills essential for successful volleyball; communication skills development through on-court calling and tactical discussions; resilience when dealing with mistakes and unsuccessful attempts; leadership opportunities when being setter or team captain; respect and sportsmanship towards opponents and teammates; managing emotions in competitive situations
Circulate constantly during skill development and game play; position at court corners for visibility of multiple areas simultaneously; stand outside circle during warm-up with clear view of all students; adopt central position during demonstrations and explanations ensuring all students can see and hear
Watch for: setting accuracy and height during drills; tactical distribution of sets to different spikers; communication quality ('mine', 'ready', specific calls); safe blocking and landing technique; rotation compliance during games; engagement and inclusion of all students; signs of frustration or exclusion requiring intervention
Step in immediately for: safety concerns (collision risks, unsafe technique, aggressive play); rule confusion creating frustration; students being excluded or not participating; inappropriate behaviour or language; students demonstrating significant struggle requiring adapted task; exceptional performance worthy of highlighting to class
Demonstrate: Exaggerate key technique points for visibility (large triangle hand shape, exaggerated knee bend in ready position); use confident, capable students as demonstrators when possible to provide peer models; perform movements slowly first showing key positions, then at full speed; use side-by-side comparison showing correct technique vs common mistake; provide verbal narration during demonstrations highlighting what to observe
Large sports hall or outdoor court area; minimum 30m x 20m for class of 30 with multiple 3v3 courts; clear run-off space 2-3 metres beyond each court boundary; adequate ceiling height for sets and serves (minimum 5 metres)
Dry, even, non-slip surface free from hazards; indoor: check floor is swept and clean; outdoor: ensure no standing water, holes, or debris; court line markings visible and not creating trip hazards
STOP play immediately if injury occurs; assess injury calmly; provide appropriate first aid following school protocols; send responsible student for additional adult support if needed; keep other students calm and occupied safely away from injured student; complete accident report form following school procedures; contact parents/guardians for significant injuries; have first aid kit and emergency contact information accessible
