This unit introduces Reception students to fundamental hand-ball skills through discovery-based learning and playful exploration. The emphasis is on building confidence with different throwing techniques whilst developing hand-eye coordination in a supportive, non-competitive environment. Students progress from individual exploration to partner activities, establishing essential motor skills that underpin future ball games and team sports.

Exploring Throwing Techniques

How many different ways can we send a beanbag to hit our target?

Key Objectives:

• Explore different ways of throwing a beanbag using dominant hand
• Develop understanding of aiming and accuracy when throwing

Lesson 2

Throwing Underarm - Accuracy and Control

Big Question:

How can we use underarm throwing to hit targets with accuracy and control?

Key Objectives:

• To develop underarm throwing technique with increasing control
• To understand the importance of aiming when throwing

Lesson 3

Overarm Throwing

Big Question:

How can we use our whole body to throw further and more accurately?

Key Objectives:

• To explore and develop overarm throwing technique using beanbags
• To understand how body movement affects throwing distance and accuracy

Rolling and Target Accuracy

Big Question:

How can we roll a ball with control to hit our target every time?

Key Objectives:

• Explore different ways of rolling a ball using hands
• Develop accuracy when rolling towards targets

Stopping a Ball with Hands

Big Question:

How can we use our hands to become brilliant ball stoppers and help our team?

• To develop hand-eye coordination when catching and stopping balls

Catching with Control

How can we use our hands to catch objects safely and successfully?
